Without Love's garment the soul

Lives naked in disgrace;

Better never to have lived at all.

Be drunk in Love,

For only Love exists.

Only Love's transaction

Will bring you to the One.

If they ask you, "What is Love?"

Tell them, "Surrendering free will,

Only in escaping freedom

Can freedom be found."

The lover is an emperor

With both worlds scattered over him,

Indifferent to them both.

Love and lover endure for all eternity;

Set your heart on this,

The rest is merely borrowed.

Forget the dead you embrace;

Embrace the unembraceable.

The rose of spring arrives with thorns,

The wine of spring

Comes with a hangover

All that spring gives birth to dies in autumn;

But Love's garden and its fullness

Does not depend upon the spring.

Don't be a bystander on this path,

By God, no death is worse than that expectancy.

Set your heart upon true gold,

Unless your heart is fool's gold;

Lend your ear,

Unless your ear is pierced with slavery.

Don't take the trembling body as your mount;

Go a lighter way;

God's love gives wings.
